Prize Pierre Bergé

On October 17th the prestigious Prix Pierre Bergé was handed out for the first time in the Designhuis Eindhoven to 2008’s best graduates Europe during the opening of the TALENT 2008 exhibition.

Pierre Bergé & Associés is a renowned international auction house based in Paris, Brussels and Geneva, that gives special attention to contemporary design and also embodies a gallery for avant-garde design in Brussels. Pierre Bergé, known as a partner of the famous couturier Yves St. Laurent, along with Frédéric Chambre took the initiative for this inaugural prize.

In a large-scale exhibition of works of 180 students from over 30 European design colleges and universities from Eindhoven to, from England to Estonia, and from Finland to France, the high level of present design disciplines in the old continent becomes clear. The impressive work of this new generation of designers in TALENT 2008 covers all disciplines that contribute to the creative industry; from high quality and serious industrial design through to jewelry and curiosities, textiles, photography, animation, interactivity and autonomous design.

The grand prize was split in two generous awards of € 5.000 each. These were awarded by a jury consisting of Pierre Bergé, Pierre Thoretton, Antoine Godeau and Frédéric Chambre from Pierre Bergé & Associés, the designers Maarten Baas and Kiki van Eijk, the director of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, Beatrice Salmon, and Intramuros editor-in-chief Chantal Hamaïde. The work of both candidates is caught in a narrative and illustrative moment; the virtual fantasy in an interactive installation by Camille Scherrer was perfectly combined with the physical fantasy world of three monumental animals by Guus van Leeuwen that serve as radiators, heating us with warmth on cold winter evenings.

Camille Scherrer
ECAL/ University of Art and Design, Lausanne, Switzerland
Project: The World of Mountains
This is a special book, when you view it through a camera, you discover a second dimension. Even without help from a camera, the reader discovers an extra layer; a world of animation that runs through its printed pages. The project was developed in close cooperation with EPLF, the laboratory for computer vision in Lausanne.

Guus van Leeuwen
Design Academy, Eindhoven, The Netherlands
Project: Domestic Animals
Guus van Leeuwen bent copper plumbing tube in the shape of animals after which he covered them in the skins of the depicted animals. The hides are filled with wheat, to hold the warmth. His work refers to a time when farmers would sleep above a barn containing animals in order to profit from their warmth.
The Designhuis offers a platform where design is connected to craft, art and innovation in an inspiring way. It has room for the presentation of thematic exhibitions and new products, for meetings and seminars and it works towards establishing connections and interaction between industry, retail and design.

Farm by studio job - Milan
The designhuis presents farm by studio job
In the fall of 2007 the city of eindhoven was presented with another icon; a permanent space to exhibit design, discuss design and promote design in the netherlands and abroad. An educational space for the public at large, the creative community and the students of the design academy in particular.
Situated in a beautiful building which is a prime example of 60’s architecture, the designhuis activities started with Bold, exhibiting the young body of work of studio job from their humble beginnings in chubby cardboard furniture to the monumental bronzes of today.
To formulate a dialogue with the international public, the designhuis is now taking place in milan and will consequently present its vision in several cities around the world during major design events where we hope to meet with colleagues, friends, press and sister institutions to collaborate and exchange so as to become a nomadic brand organising guerilla activities whenever it is needed or for fun.
As an extension of its beginnings the designhuis is proud to present ’Farm’, the most recent work of studio job as part of this year’s salone internazionale del mobile. This seminal show marks a return to the rural elements in design and society and pictures humble stable tools, a spade and fork, milk pitchers and pails,
cooking pots and a frying pan that also doubles as a mirror. Now that the farmers of the world will clothe, feed and fuel us, a farreaching movement will trigger designers to revisit folk and farm mentalities to blend rural and urban style. Perfectly in tune with our times, the young couple has been designing an ode to their country roots in stark contrast with the opulent and monumental ‘robber baron’ series designed for the Americans.
In an amazing barn-like space in the centre of milan, twenty-four bronze works and six pieces of pallissander furniture will evoke the archetypal artefacts of the low lands including germany, flandres and the netherlands.
Shown in an almost calvanistic setting, this rigourous and strong collection is counterbalanced by a folding fresco screen depicting the ideal of life on the farm in bright and naive colours.
